Now that the evenings are getting darker it is the perfect time to enjoy the ‘City of Light’ project inspired by the spirit of Samhain and Waterford’s history and heritage. The City of Lights Project reimagines the City’s walls as spaces of connection, creativity, and celebration. The light trail connects the four main areas of the city: the Viking Triangle, the Apple Market and City walls beyond, and the Cultural Quarter.

There are nineteen artworks in total illuminated across iconic buildings and medieval walls within the city. Artists include Darragh Lyons, Anne McDonnell, Karen Nolan, Dan O’Neill, Brian O’Shea, and Vadim Taranenko.

Waterford City and County Council ‘City of Light’ initiative is funded by Fáilte Ireland’s Urban Animation Investment Scheme. The next phase of this project will occur in 2026 and explores ‘Imbolc’, the ancient Celtic festival celebrating the beginning of spring.
